> Applied research aims at the further development or comparison of therapies, diagnostic methods and/or preventive measures related to multiple sclerosis (MS), with attention to their effectiveness and cost-efficiency. > This type of research is situated relatively far along the pathway from discovery to application and primarily focuses on translating scientific findings into clinical practice. However, it does not consist solely of implementation activities without an underlying research component.
> Basic research is hypothesis-driven and primarily focused on de novo knowledge creation, for example by unraveling disease mechanisms related to multiple sclerosis. > Although this type of research is not aimed at immediate clinical application, it holds clear potential for translation into clinical practice in the longer term.
